Everything You Need for Gun Care, Cleaning and Routine Maintenance

A regular cleaning routine is the single most important thing a shooter can do to protect the accuracy, reliability and resale value of a firearm. Every shot leaves behind powder residue, carbon fouling and copper deposits, and exposure to damp conditions, particularly in the UK climate, can quickly cause corrosion on blued and carbon steel surfaces. Our Gun Cleaning & Maintenance section brings together every product needed to strip, clean, lubricate and store a firearm properly between outings.

Shotgun owners will find dedicated cleaning kits in 12 bore, 20 bore and .410, along with Bisley and Napier wool mops, phosphor bronze brushes and pull-throughs sized for each gauge. For rifle shooters, we stock precision cleaning rods, bore guides, jags and brushes in every common calibre from .17 HMR and .22 rimfire right through to .308, .30-06 and larger centrefire cartridges. Bolt-action stalkers, target rifle shooters and practical disciplines are all catered for, with a strong selection of Bore Tech patches, cleaning chemicals and solvents trusted on the competition circuit.

Day-to-day upkeep is covered by our range of gun oils, greases and cleaning cloths. Napier VP90, Clenzoil Field & Range, Bisley Gun Oil and Pro-Shot One Step are all stocked, alongside stock oils and conditioners for walnut and laminated furniture. For refurbishment and touch-up work, the bluing section includes cold bluing solutions, pens and kits from Birchwood Casey and other established names.

Air rifle shooters are not forgotten. The .177 and .22 cleaning pellets, pull-throughs, airgun-specific oils and compact kits are all grouped together to make choosing the right product straightforward. Cleaning mats and gun vices protect the gun and the work surface, and our jags, mops and brushes section means replacement parts for almost any cleaning rod thread are available off the shelf.

Whether gearing up for the start of the game season, servicing a competition rig or simply giving a treasured side-by-side the care it deserves, we stock everything needed in one place. Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my shotgun?

For a shotgun used in the field or on clays, a light clean after every outing is good practice. A pull-through, a wipe down of the barrels and action, and a light coat of oil is usually enough. A deeper strip-clean is worthwhile every 500–1,000 cartridges, or at the end of each season, to clear plastic wad residue and any build-up in the forcing cones.

What is the best gun cleaning solvent?

The "best" solvent depends on the job. A general-purpose powder and fouling remover such as Napier VP90 or a CLP (Clean, Lubricate, Protect) product like Bore Tech Extreme CLP handles most routine cleaning. For stubborn copper fouling in rifle barrels, a dedicated copper solvent such as Bore Tech Cu+2 or Sweet's 7.62 is far more effective.

What is a bore snake and do I need one?

A bore snake is a weighted cord with integrated brushes and cleaning sections that pulls through the barrel in one pass, giving a quick in-the-field clean. They're ideal between shots or as a quick post-shoot clean, but they don't replace a proper strip-clean with a rod, jag and patches when carbon or copper fouling has built up.

Can I use the same cleaning kit for my shotgun and rifle?

Not really. Shotgun and rifle cleaning kits use completely different rod thread sizes, brush diameters and jag sizes to match the bore. A universal kit covers multiple calibres, but for best results, and to avoid damaging the rifling in a precision rifle, a dedicated kit or rod matched to the firearm is the safer choice.

What oil should I use on a wooden gun stock?

Traditional walnut stocks benefit from a purpose-made stock oil such as CCL Gunstock Conditioning Oil or a boiled linseed / beeswax preparation. These feed the timber, restore the lustre, and offer some protection against moisture. Avoid general-purpose gun oils on wood, they are formulated for metal and can soften or discolour stock finishes.
