In wet weather, a waterproof over-vest or shooting jacket designed with a cut-away shoulder keeps you dry without interfering with gun mount. Ear and eye protection are essential, and a peaked cap helps shade your sight picture.

Shooting jackets are cut specifically for mounting a gun. The shoulders are articulated or pleated to allow the stock to sit cleanly, cartridge pockets sit at hand height, and the back is usually longer for coverage when seated. A standard waterproof will keep you dry, but it will often catch on the gun or pull tight when you raise the barrels, which affects your shot.

Both work well, it depends on the shoot. Traditional driven game days, particularly on formal shoots, still expect tweed as a matter of etiquette. For rough shooting, walked-up days, wildfowling, and stalking, modern technical fabrics from brands like Seeland and Harkila offer better weather protection, lighter weight, and silent cloth. Many shooters own both and choose based on the day.

A shooting vest should be sized to fit comfortably over a shirt or light jumper without being tight across the chest when you mount the gun. Most shooters find their regular chest size works, but if you tend to layer up in cold weather or prefer a looser cut, size up by one.
