Choosing the Right Optic for Your Rifle or Shotgun

A well-chosen optic transforms your rifle or shotgun from a point-and-hope instrument into a precise, repeatable shooting system. We stock a broad range of shooting optics to cover every discipline we serve at Shooting Supplies. From airgun plinking and HFT through to deer stalking, foxing, clay shooting, and long-range precision rifle work.

Rifle Scopes

Our rifle scopes cover the full magnification spectrum, from compact 1-4x LPVOs for driven hunts and straight-pull carbines through to fixed-parallax 3-9x all-rounders, and high-magnification 4-25x and 5-30x scopes built for long-range precision. We stock scopes from Hawke, Vortex, Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski, and more with both first and second focal plane options, mil and MOA turrets, and illuminated reticles. If you're matching a scope to a specific rifle, a bolt-action stalking rifle, a .17 HMR rimfire, a PRS rig, or an air rifle, we can help you pick optics with the right magnification, reticle, and eye relief for the job.

Night Vision & Thermal Imaging

For foxing, rat shooting, and legal overnight pest control, we stock digital night vision rifle scopes, day-and-night hybrid units, clip-on add-ons, and dedicated thermal imaging scopes and monoculars. Pulsar, HIKMICRO, and similar thermal brands now cover entry-level handheld monoculars right through LRF-equipped rifle scopes capable of detecting quarry well beyond practical shooting range.

Red Dot Sights, Reflex Sights & Holographic Sights

For straight-pull rifles, practical shotguns, section 1 semi-autos, and air pistols, a red dot or reflex sight often beats magnified glass. We stock Holosun, Bushnell, and other makes across open reflex, enclosed reflex, tube-style red dots, and true holographic sights. Magnifiers, riser mounts, and picatinny adaptors are available to complete the setup.

Binoculars, Spotting Scopes & Rangefinders

For glassing, scoring, and range estimation we stock binoculars suited to stalking, clay shooting, and general field use, alongside spotting scopes for target shooting disciplines and laser rangefinders. All pair naturally with the scopes and rifles we carry.

Mounts, Rails & Optics Accessories

An optic is only as good as its mounting system. Browse picatinny rails, dovetail mounts, weaver bases, scope rings, flip-up lens covers, turret caps, batteries, and tripods to complete your setup.

All of our optics are available for fast UK delivery, or collection from our Bromsgrove shop in Worcestershire. If you need help matching an optic to a specific rifle or intended use, contact us or visit us in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a firearms certificate to buy a rifle scope or red dot sight in the UK?

No. Optics, including rifle scopes, red dot sights, reflex sights, holographic sights, and magnifiers are unregulated and can be purchased by anyone. A certificate is only required for the firearm itself. Lasers, thermal imaging devices, and night vision scopes are also unregulated for purchase.

What's the difference between a red dot sight, a reflex sight, and a holographic sight?

Tube style red dot sights use an LED reflected off a coated lens to create a dot. Reflex sights work on the same principle but use an open window rather than a tube, offering a wider field of view. True holographic sights use laser-generated reticles viewed through a holographic film, they're more complex and typically more expensive. In the UK the term "holographic" is often used loosely to describe open reflex sights. All three offer parallax-free, both-eyes-open shooting suited to close to mid-range work.

Which magnification rifle scope do I need?

For airgun hunting and plinking inside 50 yards, a 3-9x or 4-12x is typically ample. For general rimfire and centrefire stalking inside 200 yards, a 3-9x, 2-10x, or 4-16x covers most work. For long-range precision shooting past 300 yards, look at 4-25x, 5-25x, or 5-30x scopes with first focal plane reticles and exposed turrets. For driven hunts, straight-pull rifles, or dangerous game work, a low-power variable optic (LPVO) in 1-4x, 1-6x, or 1-8x is ideal.

Can I use a thermal or night vision scope for shooting at night in the UK?

Yes, there's no legal restriction on the equipment itself. However, shooting at night is governed by the terms of your firearms certificate (for foxing, deer management, and pest control), the Deer Act for deer species (which generally prohibits night shooting except under specific licensed circumstances), and landowner permission. Check your FAC conditions and the relevant species legislation before heading out.

Do you fit scopes to rifles?

Yes. If you buy a rifle and scope from us, we can fit, mount, and bore-sight the optic before collection as part of the service. We can also fit customer-supplied optics and rifles at our Bromsgrove shop. Contact us for current workshop timescales.
