Ten-power binoculars ask a little more of the user than an eight, and the Nature Trek 10x42 is a fair example of the trade. The extra magnification resolves detail in a hedgerow or across a valley that an 8x42 simply won't, and the 42mm objectives keep the image bright through most of the shooting day. What you give up is exit pupil: 4.2 mm here against 5.25 mm on the 8x42. At last light the eight will look brighter. If the bulk of your glassing happens in reasonable light, the ten is the more useful tool.

Optically it runs Hawke's System H2 platform with fully multi-coated lenses and phase-corrected BAK-4 roof prisms. Colour reproduction is natural rather than punched up, which matters when you are trying to work out whether that shape at 200 yards is a fallow doe or a shadow. Field of view is 101 m at 1000 m, or 5.8 degrees, which is respectable for a ten-power and enough to pick up moving quarry without hunting for it.

The body is polycarbonate under high-grip rubber armour, nitrogen purged and sealed against water and fogging. At 638 g it carries comfortably on a harness all day, and there is a quarter-inch UNC thread under the hinge cover if you would rather mount them for sustained glassing. The focus wheel runs two turns lock to lock and comes down to 2 m, which is genuinely close for this class and useful if the same pair does duty on garden birds and insects.

Eye relief is 13 mm, so spectacle wearers should try a pair before committing. Everyone else gets twist-up eyecups with position stops. A sound all-round choice for stalking, pest control and general nature watching where reach matters more than dusk performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Hawke Nature Trek 10x42 suitable for spectacle wearers?

Eye relief is 13 mm, which is on the short side for a full-size binocular. If you wear glasses you may not see the whole field of view with the eyecups wound down. The twist-up eyecups have position stops, so it is worth trying a pair with your own glasses on before committing.

Can the Nature Trek 10x42 be mounted on a tripod?

Yes. There is a quarter-inch UNC thread under the cap at the front of the hinge, so they will take any standard binocular tripod adaptor. At ten power and 638 g, a tripod earns its place if you spend long periods glassing the same piece of ground.

What is supplied with the Hawke Nature Trek 10x42?

They come with a protective carry case and case strap, a neck strap, objective and ocular lens covers, a lens cloth, a protective pouch and the instruction manual. The lens covers are the stay-on type, tethered to the binocular in use, so they are harder to lose than loose caps.

How does Nature Trek compare with Hawke's Vantage binoculars?

Vantage is Hawke's entry-level range and Nature Trek sits a step above it. Both are built on the System H2 platform, but Nature Trek uses fully multi-coated lenses and phase-corrected BAK-4 roof prisms. The practical result is better contrast and less glare, particularly when you are glassing against a bright sky.

How do these perform in low light?

Respectable, but it is not their strong suit. A 10x42 gives a 4.2 mm exit pupil against 5.25 mm from an 8x42, so at dawn and dusk an eight-power will look noticeably brighter. Through the day and into early evening the 42 mm objectives gather plenty of light for most shooting use.

What warranty do Hawke binoculars come with?

Binoculars are covered by Hawke's No-Fault Lifetime Warranty. If they are damaged or develop a fault, Hawke will repair them free of charge regardless of how it happened. It is handled through their UK service centre, and it does not cover loss, theft, deliberate damage or cosmetic marks that do not affect performance. Keep your receipt.
