Hodgdon CFE223 is a spherical rifle powder with Copper Fouling Eraser, built for consistent metering in .223 Remington, .22-250 and .308 Winchester handloads.

  • CFE 223 spherical grains flow evenly through a powder measure for consistent charges batch after batch
  • Copper Fouling Eraser additive deters copper build-up so accuracy holds for longer between cleans
  • Delivers top velocities in .204 Ruger, .223 Remington/5.56 NATO, .22-250 Remington and .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO
  • Double-base formulation with an extra clean burn

Description

The Hodgdon CFE223 is the powder for reloaders who load .223 Remington in quantity and want every charge to come out the same. Ball powder runs through a measure far more predictably than long extruded grains, so it pairs well with a progressive press or a bench measure set once for a whole session.

The copper fouling additive is the reason most people buy it. It started life in military propellant, and independent testing has found it lives up to the name, provided you start from a clean barrel. Give the bore a thorough clean before your first box and it stays cleaner from there.

The one trade-off is temperature. The makers don't class CFE 223 as temperature stable, so a stalker shooting from August into January should check velocity across the seasons.

The same additive is available for handgun calibres in CFE Pistol powder for 9mm and .45 ACP. For other burn rates, browse the rest of the Hodgdon range or our full reloading powder selection.

Product Information

How many .223 rounds will a pound of CFE 223 load?

A pound of powder is 7,000 grains, so divide that by the charge weight for your bullet from current published data. Charges vary with bullet weight and case, so there's no single answer. Weigh a sample of thrown charges when setting up. A spherical powder makes it easy to set a measure once and leave it for the batch.

Where can I find load data for CFE 223?

Use Hodgdon's own Reloading Data Center or a current Hodgdon manual, and start from the published starting load for your exact bullet. We don't publish charge weights on product pages, as data is revised and must match your components. Work up gradually and watch for pressure signs well before reaching maximum.

Is Hodgdon CFE 223 temperature sensitive?

Hodgdon doesn't class CFE 223 as temperature stable, unlike Varget and H4350 in its Extreme series. A load worked up in summer can shift in velocity on a cold winter morning. For range and bench work that rarely matters. If you stalk year round on one zero, check your load at both extremes or consider an Extreme series powder.

Is CFE 223 or Varget better for .223 Remington?

They suit different loaders. CFE 223 is spherical, meters very consistently and carries the Copper Fouling Eraser additive, so it favours batch loading and longer strings between cleans. Varget is extruded and temperature insensitive, and Hodgdon positions it for heavy bullets in competition .223. Volume loading points to CFE 223, year-round consistency to Varget.
