The Vortex Venom 1-6x24 is a second focal plane LPVO built around an illuminated, glass-etched AR-BDC3 reticle calibrated to 5.56 ballistics. True 1x at the bottom of the range and 6x at the top make it a single-optic answer for close and mid-range work.

Description

Key Features:

  • True 1x to 6x magnification covering close-quarters speed and mid-range precision without swapping optics

  • Illuminated glass-etched AR-BDC3 reticle with a 1 MOA centre dot and holdovers calibrated to 5.56 out to 650 yards

  • Six brightness settings powered by a CR2032, with the reticle staying fully visible as a black etching when switched off

  • 140 MOA of elevation and windage travel in quarter MOA clicks, with 25 MOA per turret rotation

  • XD optical system and fully multi-coated lenses give the Venom 1-6x24 bright, high-contrast images across the zoom range

  • Single-piece aircraft-grade aluminium tube, nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed against water and fogging

  • Sunshade, throw lever, flip caps, lens cloth, CR2032 and hex key supplied, though rings and mount are not

Speed, reliability, and downrange accuracy combine in a hardworking LPVO for entry-level carbine users. The Vortex Venom® 1-6x24 SFP Rifle Scope delivers true 1x-6x magnification and an AR-BDC3 reticle for accurate short to mid-range target engagements.

At 1x, with both eyes open, the reticle simply sits where you are already looking and the rifle points. Wind the magnification ring up to 6x and the same optic will hold a 1 MOA dot on something a few hundred yards out. That spread of behaviour, from unmagnified speed to deliberate precision, is the whole reason a low power variable optic exists, and the Venom 1-6x24 delivers it well below what the category usually asks.

The reticle does most of the work. The AR-BDC3 is glass etched, so the black pattern stays usable whether the illumination is on, off, or the battery is flat. A 1 MOA centre dot gives a precise point of aim, the 16.625 MOA broken circle around it drags the eye into the middle quickly at low power, and the holdovers beneath are calibrated to standard 5.56 ballistics out to 650 yards. Six brightness settings run from a single CR2032. Because the reticle sits in the second focal plane it stays a constant size at every magnification, which means the subtensions are only true at 6x. Range and hold at full power.

Turrets are capped and parallax is fixed at 100 yards, and both of those tell you how this scope expects to be used. Zero it, put the caps back on, hold with the reticle rather than dialling. There is still 140 MOA of travel each way in quarter MOA clicks should you want it, which is generous for the class. Optically it runs XD glass and fully multi-coated lenses in a single-piece aircraft-grade aluminium tube, nitrogen purged and rated shockproof.

One thing to budget for. This is the scope on its own. No rings, no mount. On an AR-pattern flat-top you will want a 30mm cantilever with forward offset to get the eye relief right, and Vortex sell precisely that bundled with this optic.

A sensible one-optic choice for straight-pull AR shooters, gallery rifle and rimfire carbine users, and anyone shooting practical at close to mid range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rifles is the AR-BDC3 reticle calibrated for?

Vortex tune it to the trajectory of standard 5.56 loads from an AR-15 length barrel. In UK terms that means straight-pull AR-platform rifles, .223 straight-pull and bolt rifles, gallery rifles and rimfire carbines. Some Vortex retail material also references .308/7.62 loads, and the subtensions do broadly suit them, but treat every holdover as a starting point and confirm it against your own barrel and load on paper.

Is a 1-6x24 a long-range scope?

Vortex list long-range shooting among its recommended uses. That is generous. Six times magnification and a parallax fixed at 100 yards make this a close to mid-range optic, and it is very good at being one. The reticle carries holdovers to 650 yards, but a holdover mark is not the same thing as the magnification and glass to use it confidently at that distance. Buy it for what it does well.

How tough is it, in practice?

The tube is machined from a single block of aircraft-grade aluminium, nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed, with ArmorTek coatings on the exterior lens surfaces. An independent test at GunMagWarehouse froze it overnight and then heated it past 150°F before shooting it, and found no shift in zero either way. It also carries the Vortex VIP warranty, which is unlimited, unconditional, transferable, and does not ask for a receipt.
