The Ranger High Grade is the smartest version of the rimfire lever action, and the differences are mostly the ones you can see. Where the standard gun wears a plain black anodised receiver, this one gets a nickel-plated receiver and a straight-grip stock in figured American walnut with a satin oil finish. It looks the part in the cabinet and still earns its keep on a Sunday morning.
Mechanically it is the same well-sorted design. The receiver is machined from a solid billet of aluminium, which keeps the rifle light and gives it a balanced feel between the hands. The lever has been engineered with deliberately low operating forces, so cycling is easy for younger or smaller shooters and quick enough to keep experienced hands entertained. A three position hammer gives a genuine half-cock and a dropped position for carrying, and the trigger has adjustable overtravel if you want to tune the feel.
The 520 mm chrome-moly steel barrel is button rifled with a 1 in 16 inch twist and finished with a target-style crown. For UK buyers the important detail is at the muzzle: it arrives threaded 1/2x20 UNF, so a rimfire moderator fits straight on. Sights are a brass bead up front and an adjustable semi-buckhorn at the rear, and the receiver top is grooved if you would rather fit a scope or a red dot.
Cleaning is refreshingly simple. One action screw splits the rifle in two, which lets you pull a patch through from the chamber end and store it compactly.
A .22 lever action for the shooter who wants the traditional Winchester look with modern manufacturing behind it, and one that needs a firearms certificate.
