Everything You Need to Reload Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun Cartridges
The Components of Consistency: Powder & Primers
Successful load development relies on the stability of your consumables. In the UK, temperature sensitivity is a major factor for the year-round stalker. This is why we stock a wide range of Vihtavuori and Hodgdon powders, known for their clean-burning properties and predictable pressure curves across varying climates. Pairing the right powder with a consistent ignition source such as our Federal or CCI Primers is the foundation of every accurate load.
Transitioning to Lead-Free Components
With the UK’s shift toward non-toxic ammunition, many handloaders are re-evaluating their projectile choices. Transitioning to monolithic copper bullets (like the Hornady CX) requires a shift in technical thinking. These projectiles are longer than lead equivalents and often require faster twist rates and specific seating depths to achieve optimal stabilisation. We provide the technical components and the expertise to help you navigate this transition without sacrificing terminal performance.
Expert Equipment for Every Stage
Whether you are a high-volume pistol calibre reloader or a long-range precision rifle shooter, your hardware matters. We carry Lee Precision for accessible, high-quality entry points, and RCBS or Lyman for heavy duty, lifetime-service bench tools. By separating our reloading inventory from our factory ammunition, we ensure that the dedicated handloader finds exactly what they need from ultrasonic cleaners to precision micrometer dies without the noise of off-the-shelf alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need a licence to buy reloading supplies in the UK?
A Firearms Certificate (FAC) is required to purchase smokeless reloading powder, primers and loaded ammunition components for rifle and pistol cartridges. A Shotgun Certificate (SGC) is sufficient for shotgun primers and shotgun-specific components. Unprimed cases, bullets and equipment such as presses, dies and scales do not require a certificate.
- Is it cheaper to reload your own ammunition?
For many rifle and pistol calibres, reloading is significantly cheaper than buying factory ammunition, particularly for larger calibres like 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester and .45-70, where savings of 40–60% per round are common. Shotgun cartridge reloading offers more modest savings but gives you control over shot type, load weight and velocity. The bigger benefit for most shooters is accuracy tuning rather than cost.
- What equipment do I need to start reloading?
A basic reloading setup includes a single-stage or turret press, a calibre-specific set of reloading dies, a powder measure or scale, a priming tool and a case preparation kit (deburring and chamfering tools). Starter kits from Lee Precision, Hornady and RCBS bundle these essentials together and are the most cost-effective way to begin. You'll also need reloading components, brass, primers, powder and bullets in your chosen calibre.
- What's the difference between rifle, pistol and shotgun primers?
Primers are categorised by size (small or large) and by the cartridge they ignite. Small pistol, large pistol, small rifle, large rifle, magnum rifle and shotgun primers each have specific cup thicknesses and priming compound formulations matched to the chamber pressure and ignition requirements of that cartridge type. Substituting the wrong primer can cause unreliable ignition or dangerous pressure spikes. Always follow published load data.
- Can I reload lead shot shotgun cartridges in the UK?
Yes, at present lead shot remains legal for reloading, though its use is being phased out for live quarry shooting by 2029 under a voluntary and regulatory transition. Steel shot, bismuth and tungsten alternatives are increasingly available for reloaders. We stock non-toxic shot options alongside traditional lead shot and the wads suitable for each.
