Separate seating and crimping is the main reason to choose this four-die set over the three-die version. The seater handles bullet depth on its own, set by micrometer, and the carbide factory crimp die finishes each round in a separate pass. Splitting the two keeps seating depth consistent and makes each die easier to adjust.
The carbide full length sizing die resizes the whole case, while the powder through expanding die opens and bells the case mouth as it drops the charge. The factory crimp die applies a roll crimp and sizes the loaded round at the same time, so finished ammunition chambers freely. Case trim length becomes less critical as a result, which saves time at the bench.
Lee supplies these 38 Special reloading dies with a universal shell holder, powder dipper and instructions with load data for both 38 Special and 357 Magnum. Ultimate lock rings come fitted to every die. One set covers both cartridges: back the expander and seating die out roughly two turns to suit the longer 357 Magnum case.
A sensible choice for lever-action and long barrelled revolver shooters loading 38 Special and 357 Magnum who want a proper factory-style crimp without fiddling with a combined seat-and-crimp die.
