The Steiner Ranger 4-16x56 is a low-light hunting scope built around a 56mm objective and better than 90% light transmission. Side parallax from 50 metres and an illuminated 4A-I reticle with eleven brightness settings make it a capable choice for fox control and deer stalking at last light.
Key Features:
56mm objective with better than 90% light transmission for shooting in the last usable light of the evening
4A-I reticle in the second focal plane with a fine illuminated centre dot roughly 1cm wide at 100 metres
Eleven illumination settings, six for night and five for day, each separated by an off position
Side parallax adjustable from 50 metres to infinity, unusual in the Steiner Ranger 4 series where most models sit fixed at 100 metres
Capped, resettable hunting turrets clicking in 0.1 mrad increments with 7.2 mrad of travel in each direction
One-piece aluminium body, nitrogen filled, rated to 11G of recoil and workable from minus 25 to plus 63 degrees
Ten year warranty with two years on the electronics
A 56mm objective and better than 90% light transmission tell you what this optic is built for. The Ranger 4 4-16x56 exists for the last half hour of legal light, when a fox slips out along a hedge line or a roe steps into a ride, and the shot is either taken then or not at all.
The 4A-I reticle is the classic German 4 pattern, thick posts drawing the eye inward to finer lines, with a very fine illuminated dot at the centre measuring roughly a centimetre across at 100 metres. It sits in the second focal plane, so it stays the same apparent size at every magnification and the sight picture never changes as you wind up the power. Eleven brightness settings, six for night and five for day, are stepped with an off position between each, meaning a single click takes you from dark to whichever level you last used.
Side parallax runs from 50 metres to infinity, which separates this model from most of the series, where parallax is fixed at 100 metres. The turret carries tactile marks at the 100 metre position so it can be found by feel in the dark, and the illumination dial sits on the same housing. Elevation and windage are capped hunting turrets moving in 0.1 mrad clicks with 7.2 mrad of travel each way. They reset to zero but there is no zero stop, which is the right decision on a stalking scope and worth knowing if you intend to dial heavily rather than hold over.
Steiner build it from one-piece aluminium, hard anodised to military standards, nitrogen filled against internal fogging and rated to withstand 11G of recoil. At 375mm and 680g it is not light, though most of that weight is glass. This is the version without an integrated rail, so budget for a set of 30mm rings.
A sound choice for the fox shooter or deer stalker who wants German glass and dependable mechanics without stepping up to alpha money.

They sit in a sensible middle ground. Steiner glass does not match Swarovski, Zeiss or Kahles at the top of the market, and nobody at Steiner pretends otherwise. What you get instead is genuinely reliable mechanics, good contrast and edge sharpness, and a serious warranty, at roughly half the money. Chris Parkin's Rifle Shooter test concluded it performs above its direct competitors at the same price with comparable specifications.
It is a stalking and fox scope first. At 4x you have enough field of view for a close, quick shot in woodland. At 16x, with parallax dialled to the actual distance, there is plenty of magnification for a deliberate shot across a field at typical UK quarry ranges. The 56mm objective is doing the real work here, gathering light rather than extending range.
No to both. This is the plain 4A-I model without an integrated rail, so it needs conventional 30mm rings. Steiner also make a BC version with ballistic control turrets and a set of five engraved ballistic rings, and a variant with a rail built in. Neither is what is supplied here, so check which you are ordering.
