A second focal plane LPVO with a genuine 1x at the bottom of its range and an illuminated AR-BDC3 reticle holding out to 650 yards. The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24 covers close-range speed and mid-range precision on one 30mm tube.
Key Features:
True 1x magnification for both eyes open shooting at close range
Illuminated glass-etched AR-BDC3 reticle with holdovers out to 650 yards
Second focal plane design keeps the reticle a constant size at every power
1 MOA centre dot inside a 16.625 MOA broken circle for fast target pickup
Capped turrets with half MOA clicks and 140 MOA of elevation and windage travel
30mm aircraft grade aluminium tube, nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed
Thread-in throw lever and CR2032 battery included in the box
A true 1x at the bottom of the zoom range is what separates a low power variable optic from a small scope. The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24 delivers it, and at that setting the illuminated centre dot behaves much like a red dot, letting you shoot with both eyes open and pick up targets quickly at close range. Wind it out to 8x and the glass-etched AR-BDC3 reticle gives holdover references to 650 yards, subtended for common 5.56 loads. On other cartridges those marks are a starting reference rather than a solution, so plan on confirming them at the range.
The reticle sits in the second focal plane, meaning it stays the same visual size at every magnification. Subtensions are only true at maximum power, but the sight picture never gets cluttered at 8x or invisibly thin at 1x, which suits a scope spending most of its life at the bottom of the range. Adjustments run at half MOA per click through capped turrets, with 140 MOA of travel in each axis and 44 MOA per rotation. It weighs just under 500 g (17.4 oz), middling for the class, and the thread-in throw lever fitted as standard makes the magnification ring quick to swing under time pressure.
The body is machined from a single block of aircraft grade aluminium, nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed, with Vortex's unlimited lifetime warranty behind it. Worth being clear that this is the SFP AR-BDC3 model, not the first focal plane EBR-8 version, which is a different scope at a different price.
Well suited to straight pull AR platforms, rimfire carbines and practical rifle disciplines where speed up close matters more than precision at distance.

The BDC marks run out to 650 yards. They are subtended for common 5.56 loads out of an AR-15, which is Vortex's own reference, so on any other cartridge or barrel length treat them as a starting point and confirm on paper. Realistically the scope is at its best inside 300 yards, where 8x is plenty and the eye box is still forgiving.
Reticle plane and reticle design. This is the AR-BDC3 in the second focal plane with capped turrets. The FFP model carries the EBR-8 MOA reticle in the first focal plane and sits higher up the range. Both are 1-8x24 on a 30mm tube, so the choice comes down to whether you want a reticle that scales with magnification.
No. Optics are not controlled items and can be bought by anyone over 18 without a certificate. The rifle you fit it to is a different matter, and if that is a Section 1 firearm you will need a valid FAC with the relevant slot before we can transfer it.
