Pulsar Forward FN455 digital night vision monocular with a 1280x720 sensor, 50 mm F1.0 lens and 940 nm IR. The module also fits in front of day optics.
The FN455 is two tools. Out of the box it is a handheld spotter, with the digital module sitting in front of a 5x monocular. Take the monocular off and the same module fits ahead of a spotting scope or binoculars on an adapter such as the 50 mm Forward adapter ring, turning glass you already own into night glass. Pulsar recommends day optics between 2x and 8x.
Digital night vision shows the scene much as daylight does, so it is strong at working out what you are looking at. For sweeping open ground to find warm bodies at long range, thermal is quicker, and plenty of people carry one of each.
Once it is properly dark, start on the lowest IR setting and step up only as far as the distance needs. You get more from each charge that way.
With battery and monocular fitted it weighs just over a kilo, so resting it on a gate or stick makes long spells easier. It suits foxing, deer counts and keepers checking pens after dark, and if you already run other Pulsar kit the shared IPS battery packs are a bonus. The newer Forward FN455S adds an illuminator with an adjustable light spot, and the full night vision range sits alongside both.

Pulsar quotes a detection range of 500 m for an animal 1.7 m tall. Detection means the device shows something is there, not that you can tell what it is. Identification happens much closer and depends on the IR setting, weather and background, so treat 500 m as the limit for spotting movement rather than for deciding on a shot.
This is the original Forward FN455, Pulsar SKU 78196. The FN455S is the current version and comes with the Ultra-X940S illuminator, which steps through 175, 350 and 700 mW and has an adjustable light spot. Choose the FN455S if illuminator output and spot adjustment matter most. Both use a 1280x720 sensor, so check the SKU when comparing listings.
Yes. The digital module comes off the 5x30 monocular and fits in front of a spotting scope or binoculars using a Pulsar Forward adapter, which stays on the objective and doubles as a lens cover by day. Pulsar recommends optics between 2x and 8x. The adapter's insert ring is chosen by the outer diameter of your objective housing, so measure that first.
Pulsar rates the supplied IPS7 pack at up to 9 hours at 22°C with Wi-Fi and IR off. Real-world time depends on temperature and how much you use the IR and recording. The pack is quick-release, so a spare goes in within seconds, and the larger IPS10 and IPS14 packs fit the same slot for longer outings.
