Sound moderators, sometimes referred to as silencers or suppressors, are muzzle-mounted devices that reduce the noise and flash produced when a firearm is discharged. While no moderator will eliminate sound entirely, a well-chosen unit can bring the report down to a level that is far more comfortable for the shooter, nearby livestock, and local residents. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive recommends that noise exposure at the ear should remain below 140 dB, and a quality moderator can help you stay well within that threshold.
We split our moderator range into three subcategories to help you find the right fit. Our air rifle moderators include popular models from Huggett, Weihrauch, and BRK, covering both 1/2" UNF and proprietary thread patterns. For rimfire shooters, we carry lightweight options from SAK, Wildcat, and ASE Utra that suit .22 LR, .17 HMR and similar calibres. Our centrefire rifle moderators feature the full Wildcat range, including the Evolution, Elite, and Predator series, alongside options from A-Tec, Stalon, Freyr & Devik, Blaser, and DPT.
When selecting a moderator, there are a few key factors to consider. Thread size is the most important starting point, common UK thread sizes include 1/2" UNF, 1/2" UNEF, M14x1, M15x1, and M18x1. Check your barrel's thread specification before buying, and if you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help confirm it. Calibre rating matters too, always ensure the moderator is rated for your calibre or above. A .30 calibre moderator can be used on a .243, for example, but not the other way around.
Construction varies between steel, aluminium, and titanium. Steel moderators tend to be the most durable and affordable. Aluminium units are lighter, useful on sporting rifles where balance matters, but may not suit magnum calibres. Titanium models like those in the Wildcat Elite range offer the best strength-to-weight ratio, though at a premium price point. Over-barrel designs, such as those from DPT, sit back over the barrel to reduce added length and improve handling.
If you hold a firearms certificate, remember that a moderator counts as a separate item on your FAC. You'll need a spare slot or a variation before purchasing a centerfire or rimfire moderator. Air rifle moderators do not require any certificate. We can arrange RFD-to-RFD transfers if you'd prefer to collect from a dealer closer to you.
For help choosing the right moderator for your setup, feel free to call us or visit our Bromsgrove shop. We're happy to discuss thread compatibility, calibre suitability, and which brands suit your shooting style, whether that's pest control, deer stalking, target shooting, or general plinking.
It depends on the type. Air rifle moderators do not require any certificate and can be purchased freely. However, rimfire and centerfire moderators are classed as Section 1 firearms under UK law, so you'll need a valid firearms certificate with an available slot for the moderator before you can buy one.
Thread size depends on your rifle's barrel. Common UK thread sizes include 1/2" UNF (popular on air rifles and many rimfires), 1/2" UNEF, M14x1, M15x1, and M18x1 for centerfire rifles. Check your barrel or your rifle's manual for the thread specification, or contact us and we can help you confirm the correct fitting.
In most cases, fitting a moderator either maintains or slightly improves accuracy by reducing barrel harmonics and felt recoil. The added weight at the muzzle can also help dampen vibration. It's worth re-zeroing your scope after fitting a moderator, as the point of impact may shift slightly.
A muzzle-forward moderator sits entirely ahead of the muzzle, which adds length to your rifle. An over-barrel design slides back over the barrel, significantly reducing the added length and improving balance. Over-barrel moderators are popular on sporting and stalking rifles where compactness matters.
Maintenance depends on the design. Strippable moderators with removable baffles, such as those from Wildcat and DPT, can be disassembled and cleaned with a suitable solvent. Sealed units require less maintenance but cannot be serviced internally. For centerfire moderators, occasional cleaning helps prevent carbon build-up that can affect performance over time.
