Description

The Hawke Vantage HD 30 1-8x24 IR Circle Dot carries the reticle built for driven boar and other fast shooting at moving game. On low power the circle frames the animal and pulls the eye to the centre, so the shot comes on instinct rather than a search for the crosshair.

It is a second focal plane reticle, so the circle and dot stay the same size through the zoom. At 8x the dot covers 1 MOA, about an inch at 100 yards. Wind it back towards 1x and the dot covers more of the target, which is what you want for a quick shot close in. For marked holdovers, the Vantage HD 30 1-8x24 Tactical BDC is the better choice, and the Vantage HD 30 1-8x24 L4A Dot suits stalkers who prefer posts to a circle.

In the UK that makes it a good match for a straight-pull rifle or .22 semi-auto in woodland, gallery rifle events with turning targets, or a boar trip abroad. Fit it with 30mm rings and set the mount so the eyepiece sits at the full eye relief. Parallax is fixed at 100 yards, the sensible setting for a scope that spends most of its time on low power, and it is backed by Hawke's no-fault lifetime warranty.

Product Information

What is the Circle Dot reticle on the Hawke Vantage HD 30 designed for?

Fast aiming at moving game. Hawke designed it for driven hunting, where shots come quickly and close. The illuminated circle frames the animal at low magnification and the 1 MOA centre dot gives a precise aim point when you wind up to 8x. It suits snap shots better than long, measured ones where holdover marks earn their place.

Should I choose the Circle Dot, L4A Dot or Tactical BDC version of the Vantage HD 30 1-8x24?

Choose by how you shoot. The Circle Dot is the quickest to pick up on moving quarry. The L4A Dot gives a cleaner, post-style picture for general stalking. The Tactical BDC adds holdover marks built around 5.56 ballistics, so it suits a .223 used at varied distances. The optics, turrets and red and green illumination are common to all three.

What does IR mean on a Hawke Vantage scope?

IR stands for illuminated reticle. On this scope the circle and centre dot light up in red or green at five brightness levels, set on a stepped rheostat and powered by a CR2032 battery supplied in the box. At dusk, run the lowest setting you can see clearly so the dot does not wash out the target.
