Description

Key Features:

  • 35mm F1.0 lens on the CQ35L 2.0 reaches 1,800m detection range with a wide 12.5 degree field of view for sweeping cover

  • 640 x 512 VOx sensor at 12 micron pixel pitch with sub-15mK sensitivity separates an animal from cool background in rain and mist

  • Integrated Class 1 laser rangefinder reads to 1,000m within 1m and shows horizontal distance alongside straight line for ranging across slopes

  • Rear focus wheel sits under the fingertip so focus and zoom can be worked one-handed in the dark

  • HSIS shutterless system removes the periodic image freeze that interrupts observation on shutter-based thermals

  • Replaceable 21700 cell runs 6.5 hours with rangefinder and Zoom Pro active and swaps without tools, with USB-C accepting a power bank

  • 458g body with IP67 sealing and 64GB onboard storage for photo and video capture

The 35mm lens is what defines this one in use. It is a wide-view instrument first and a long-reach one second, and for most UK ground that is the right way round. Scanning a wood edge, a stubble field or a hedgerow, the limiting factor is rarely how far the sensor can see. It is how much ground you can sweep before something moves. The compact HikMicro shell suits that kind of work, since the whole unit runs from one hand while the other stays on a rifle, a gate or a dog lead.

Be clear about the 1,800m figure. That is a detection range, meaning a warm body of roughly deer size registers as a heat signature. Working out what it is, and whether it is legal quarry, takes considerably less distance than that. The rangefinder is the more practical number in the field, and the option to read true horizontal distance rather than line of sight is worth having on steep ground.

Foxing, deer management and night pest control are where it earns its keep, and it sits at the compact end of our thermal imaging range rather than the long-range end. If your ground is open and you spend more time identifying at distance than sweeping for movement, the 50mm Condor CQ50L 2.0 is the one to look at instead.

Product Information

What is the difference between the Condor CQ35L 2.0 and the older Condor Pro CQ35L?

Different generations. The Pro CQ35L is the earlier model, running a sub-20mK sensor, 18650 batteries and a magnesium body. The CQ35L 2.0 moves to a sub-15mK sensor, a single replaceable 21700 cell rated at 6.5 hours, a rear focus wheel and the HSIS shutterless system. Same 35mm lens and 1,800m detection range, better sensor and handling.

Should I get the 35mm CQ35L 2.0 or the 50mm CQ50L 2.0?

Lens, not sensor. Both carry the same 640 x 512 sub-15mK detector. The 35mm gives 1.9x base magnification, a 12.5 degree field of view and 1,800m detection. The 50mm Condor CQ50L 2.0 trades width for reach at 2.7x and 2,600m. Take the 35mm for woodland, hedgerows and close cover, the 50mm for open hill and stubble.

What does the 1,800m range actually mean in the field?

It is a detection figure, not an identification one. At 1,800m the sensor registers a warm object of roughly deer size and no more than that. Species, sex and whether a shot is safe all get decided a great deal closer in. On the 35mm the useful skill is sweeping ground quickly, then closing or zooming to confirm.

Can it really be operated with one hand?

It is built around one-handed use. The rear focus wheel falls under the fingertip, the buttons are shaped to be told apart in the dark and with gloves, and the power button is offset to avoid knocking it. At 458g it is comfortable on a neck strap for a long night. Auto screen-off keeps light down between scans.
